Eoin Morgan expects a change in direction for England in one-day cricket following his side’s early exit from the ICC Cricket World Cup.

The 28-year-old left-hander saw his side finish the tournament with a nine-wicket duckworth/lewis victory over Afghanistan, their fate in the tournament having already been sealed by defeat to Bangladesh on Monday.

And the Middlesex left-hander admitted that England have failed to gel as a side having lost all four matches against Test playing nations in the tournament.

“We haven’t had a great run of form as a team,” he said. “Coming up to the World Cup, we hoped we’d build some form for the Quarter Final, Semi Final and Final.

“But we’ve made the same mistakes we have been doing for a while. It comes with experience and a big part of that is relying on the senior players.

“We haven’t gelled as a side on the field and we haven’t managed to string two performances together, which is really disappointing.”

Morgan believes he will be stronger for the experience of captaining England during the tournament, but admitted to being unsure about his future in the role.

“I’ve learned a lot about the team,” he said. “Obviously there will be a review from here so with regards to captaincy it’s out of my hands.

“I certainly think my experience as captain has made me a better player and a better person.

“There has to be a little bit of a change in direction.

"Test match cricket should remain a priority but certain things have to change because, over a long period of time, we haven’t had success at World Cups.”

And Morgan believes England players would benefit from greater exposure to global tournaments.

“I’m a huge fan of the two tournaments I’ve played in; the IPL and the Big Bash. What it certainly does do is take you out of your comfort zone and put you under a different kind of pressure

“The added pressure of performing with a lot of noise going on and having that tag of being an overseas cricketer; those are things I’ve learned from those two tournaments I’ve played in. You generate belief and confidence with those experiences.”
