Martin Guptill scored a century as New Zealand beat Bangladesh to complete a clean sweep of victories in the group stages of the ICC Cricket World Cup.
The 28-year-old struck 11 fours and four sixes en route to his sixth career One Day International century, which paved the way for a nervy three wicket success in Hamilton.
New Zealand made a shaky start to their pursuit of 289 to win as Brendan McCullum and Kane Williamson were dismissed in single figures by the left-arm spin of stand-in skipper Shakib-Al-Hasan, who finished with 4-55.
Ross Taylor steadied the ship by joining Guptill in a third-wicket stand of 131 before the Kiwi centurion, who had been suffering with cramp, became Al-Hasan’s third victim with the score on 164.
Grant Elliott’s 39 took New Zealand past 200 and Corey Anderson – with the same score - took the Kiwis to within 20, with two overs to go and seven wickets down.
The experienced heads of Daniel Vettori and Tim Southee took the home side safely home with a brisk unbeaten stand of 21, off nine deliveries, to win the match with seven deliveries to spare.
Mohammad Mahmudullah had earlier completed back-to-back centuries for Bangladesh, scoring 128 not out, from 123 balls, in a total of 288-7 after New Zealand had won the toss and elected to field.
The Tigers number four hit 12 fours and three sixes and received support from Soumya Sarkar, who made 51, in a third wicket partnership of 90.
Al-Hasan scored 23 off 18 balls; Mohammad Rahman provided late impetus with 40 off 23 balls.
The Tigers are now confirmed to face India in the Quarter Finals having finished fourth in Pool A.
New Zealand’s last eight opposition is still to be confirmed after McCullum’s men topped the pool.
