Martin Guptill scored 237, the highest ever individual score in ICC Cricket World Cup history, as New Zealand beat the West Indies by 143 runs in today's Quarter-Final.
Guptill faced 163 balls and struck 24 fours and 11 sixes as he surpassed the record of 217 - set by Chris Gayle earlier in the same tournament against Zimbabwe - and helping the Black Caps set a target of 394.
Trent Boult then took 4-44 as West Indies were all out for 250 in reply, with 19.3 overs to go, despite Gayle - who overcame a back injury - striking eight maximums in his 61 off 33 deliveries.
New Zealand won the toss, elected to bat and missed a guilt-edged opportunity to dismiss Guptill off the third ball of the match; Marlon Samuels putting down the opportunity off the bowling of Jerome Taylor.
And although Taylor did pick up the wicket of McCullum just a few overs later, Jason Holder taking the catch at deep-cover, Kane Williamson scored 33 and Ross Taylor 42 to provide Guptill with the support required to pass 100 in 111 balls.
The opener's third-wicket stand alongside Taylor was worth 143 and New Zealand were 232-3 at the 40-over stage, providing the springboard for an explosive final ten overs, in which 153 runs were added.
Grant Elliott scored 27 off 11 balls, but the majority of the late acceleration was provided by Guptill, whose personal tally was swelled by 92 runs, off 32 balls, between overs 41 and 50 as the Kiwis posted 393.
Gayle's World Cup record took a tumble in over 48 and the West Indian offered his opponent a warm handshake of congratulation before coming out firing when the West Indies chase began; passing 50 in 26 balls and adding 53 for the third-wicket with Marlon Samuels.
But, by the time Gayle was bowled by the returning Adam Milne, four wickets had already fallen to Boult's left-armers. And despite lower-order defiance, including Notts bound Darren Sammy with 27 off 16 balls, Holder's men bowed out of the tournament while New Zealand progressed to face South Africa in Tuesday's Semi-Final.
