Sam Wood’s 95 and two wickets apiece for Brett Hutton and Will Gidman gave Nottinghamshire seconds the upper hand after day one of their Championship clash with Lancashire, a remarkable turn around having been 4-3 early in the morning session.
The hosts won the toss at Notts Sports Club and elected to bat first but lost their first three wickets in just 15 balls.
Greg Smith (1) was bowled by Toby Lester last ball of the second over and then two wickets fell with the first two balls of the next, Tom Moores (2) caught behind and Michael Lumb (0) LBW to the bowling of Gavin Griffiths.
Will Gidman (15) and captain Brett Hutton (14) aided the recovery alongside Wood, but after they fell to Daniel Lamb and Lester respectively, Notts were still struggling on 67-5.
Adam Tillcock came to the crease and remained unbeaten without scoring at lunch, Wood having moved to 32 to push the score to 80-5.
They had progressed the score to 97 in the second session before Aaron Lilley bowled Tillcock for eight bringing Luke Fletcher to the middle.
Wood went to his half-century and the pair had added 36 before George Edwards got his first wicket, Lilley taking the catch to remove Fletcher for 17.
Keast had made 12 before falling to Lilley and Wood looked on for a well-deserved century but the left-hander edged through to Liam Livingstone at first slip on 95.
Last man Matt Carter joined Webster and the pair got the score up to 227 before the latter fell for a more than useful 31, leaving Carter unbeaten on 11.
Tea was taken and after the break Harry Dearden and Alex Mellor opened the Lancashire reply and had reached 3-0 before bad light and rain intervened.
When play did resume there was just over 15 overs left in the day and the hosts used the remaining time to make crucial early inroads.
Luke Fletcher started the ball rolling, Dearden edging a leg-side ball through to wicketkeeper Keast on six.
Hutton then struck twice in quick succession to trap Livingstone (5) LBW and bowl Robert Jones for two, the visitors falling to 29-3.
Lancashire captain Stephen Parry’s stay at the crease was short, Gidman striking twice in an over to trap Parry (6) and Griffiths (0), both LBW, the fifth wicket falling with the score on 36.
Daniel Lamb joined Mellor and they saw the remaining overs out, the score at the close was 43-5 with Alex Mellor not out 17 and Lamb yet to score.
