David Willey is aiming for an extended run in the ‘new look’ England side after taking 3-69 in a losing cause during the third Royal London One-Day International.
The game was the second ODI for the Northamptonshire all-rounder and the 25-year-old is excited to be involved, especially since his last few years have been dogged by injury.
“This year has been a breathe of fresh air for me as I have been able to bowl injury free following surgery on my shoulder,” he said.
“It is an exciting time to be in the side, a very proud moment to be selected alongside some other young and inexperienced players.
“The three games so far have been really exciting and these young players are being encouraged by the captain and coaches to express themselves and play like they have been doing for their counties.
“I didn’t expect to be part of this and opening the bowling as my main aim this year was to stay fit throughout the season.
“It was a big surprise but a great opportunity and one I am out to make the most of.”
With a number of high scores in the first three games, bowlers have seen the ball disappearing over the ropes more often than they would like.
However, Willey believes the bowlers still have a part to play in the outcome of the series and welcomed advice from his father Peter, the former England all-rounder.
“My dad’s main advice was just to enjoy the occasion as you never know how long you will be representing England with the three lions on your chest,” he said.
“As a bowling unit we have been bowling on pretty flat wickets and that will probably not change but it is vital to stick together.
“We are being aggressive with our field placings and take wickets to bring the run rate down.
“To do that it is key to use all our variations and develop our skills as quickly as the batsmen are developing theirs.
“The way cricket is being played at the moment you have to be ready to take on any role dependent on the scenario of the game.
“Coming in to the side I have been relaxed in doing those jobs as we have just been told to keep doing what we had been for our counties.”
