Having travelled the world playing the shortest format of the game, Darren Sammy should know a thing or two about the best way to play T20 cricket.

The West Indian international has taken in the Indian Premier league with Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad, the Big Bash with Hobart Hurricanes and the NatWest T20 Blast with Glamorgan, and now with the Outlaws.

Looking forward to his second game with Notts, against the Leicestershire Foxes, Sammy believes being ready for anything on the pitch is crucial if you are to stay ahead of the opposition.

“The wicket last week was one where you had to vary your pace and the captain used myself and Mullaney well instead of the two spinners because of the short boundary,” the 31-year-old said.

“Who knows, come Friday I might bowl from a different end and have to change the way I bowl but every game is about assessing the conditions which we did well against Durham to come out victorious.

“We played well as a team, used the conditions to our advantage and the fans were happy, so I’m looking forward to the next few games, especially the last home game for me on Friday.

“T20 cricket is about taking the challenge to the opposition and being on step ahead of them throughout the game.

“If you win by 15-20 runs in a T20 game it counts as a massive victory.”

The Outlaws didn’t have it all their own way during the Durham victory, losing early wickets on their way to posting 175-7 from their 20 overs.

However, Sammy is pleased with how the batsmen didn’t go in their shell but instead continued to back their skills.

“We were in a spot of bother as obviously we don’t want to be losing wickets in the first six overs but that’s T20 cricket and the batsmen continued to express themselves and back their skills,” he said.

“Sometimes you do have to rebuild the innings but, once they did that, they took on the bowlers, gave us momentum and provided a good platform to launch from.

“We scored 175, but at one point in time – with Wessels and Patel at the crease – we looked like getting into the 190s.

“When bowling we got early wickets with the new ball, which was key, before bowling tight overs in the middle, backed up by Fletch and Harry doing a great job at the end.

“Not every day will be your day as an individual, but as long as the team is performing and winning matches, that is what matters.

“As long as we keep improving as a team, individually performances will come on each given day.

“There are 120 events with the ball and 120 events with the bat. You try to win more events than the opposition, you seize the key moments and that’s how you come out victorious.
