Samit Patel believes eight or nine wins will be enough to secure Notts Outlaws’ place in the NatWest T20 Blast Quarter-Finals.

Seven victories was enough for eventual champions Birmingham Bears to qualify from the north group in 2014, and it’s away to the Bears that the Outlaws are hoping to secure their fourth win of the current competition on Friday.

Notts successfully defended a total of 158-9 at Edgbaston in 2014 and Patel is drawing inspiration from that performance.

“We were disappointed to lose to Leicestershire on Friday but to turn it round so quickly at Worcester was a great effort from the boys,” said the all-rounder. 

“Momentum is the key word for us now and we know we’ll have to be on our ‘A’ game when we go to Edgbaston because they are the defending champions.

“But we’re confident. We defended a pretty low total when we won there last year and will be happy to do the same again if that’s what it takes to come away with the points.”

Patel has again been a key performer for the Outlaws in the shortest form so far this season, contributing scores of 41, 46 and 30 as well as sustaining a miserly economy rate of 6.18 runs-per-over.

The 30-year-old was awarded man of the match in Sunday’s 11-run victory over the Worcestershire Rapid after scoring 30 from 24 balls to keep the Outlaws on track with the bat, followed by a game-changing spell of 3-17 from four overs with the ball.

And, heading into Friday’s round of matches in second place, Patel is confident of helping Notts secure a sixth successive quarter-final appearance.

“It’s all about getting out of the group and making the quarter finals and we’re looking at getting about eight or nine wins to get through and we should do that.

“Personally I don’t really mind if we get a home quarter final or we have to play away, just so long as we’re in the quarters, I don’t mind.”
