Fourteen wickets fell on a topsy-turvy second day of Nottinghamshire Seconds’ Championship match with Lancashire at Notts Sports Club, before Will Gidman’s 70* put the hosts in a strong position heading in to the final day.

Lancashire resumed day two on 43-5 with Alex Mellor 17* and Daniel Lamb yet to score but the latter could only add two before he edged through to keeper Tom Keast off Luke Fletcher.

Alex Mellor continued to hold the innings together, adding 53 with Josh Bohannon, before he finally fell for 44, bowled by Matt Carter, the seventh wicket down with just 113 on the board.

Bohannon continued the visitors’ push towards 200 though, adding 46 with Aaron Lilley (25) before the latter was stumped by Keast off Carter.

George Edwards joined Bohannon who reached his fifty from just 65 balls but in the 51st Edwards (6) was caught by Brett Hutton off Carter, Lancashire 177-9.

Last in was Toby Lester who was out for nine when he was LBW to Adam Tillcock in the 60th over, the innings closing on 202 with Bohannon unbeaten on 72.

After the break Nottinghamshire commenced their second innings with a lead of 25, Greg Smith and Tom Keast opening the batting.

However, Keast didn’t last long as he was LBW to Lester off the first ball of the second over, falling without scoring.

Smith (15) fell to Lester in the same way off last ball of the eighth over and Sam Wood was unable to emulate his excellent knock from the first innings, caught and bowled by Lamb for seven.

Two further quick wickets, Michael Lumb caught behind for 16 and Brett Hutton ran out for three, left the hosts struggling on 60-5.

Adam Tillcock (30) and Luke Fletcher (23) both added 50 partnerships with Gidman but failed to kick on, the score on 162-7 when Fletcher was caught by Liam Livingstone off Lilley.

Simon Webster was next to the crease but in the 58th over he was caught at short leg by Harry Dearden off Lilley, out without scoring as Ben Kitt joined Gidman. Lester (4-25) returned to bowl Kitt for one in the final over of the day, the close of play score 180-9, a lead of 205 runs with Gidman unbeaten on 70.
