Mick Newell believes the recruitment of Peter Moores as a Coaching Consultant will inspire Nottinghamshire’s cricketers and coaches to improve.
The Director of Cricket believes the camp is in need of a fresh pair of eyes and he praised the coaching credentials of his new recruit, calling the appointment a “no-brainer.”
“I feel there’s a need for some fresh ideas in the dressing room,” Newell said. “To have a bloke living 20 minutes away who is a very high quality coach, it seems like a no-briner to invite him to come and help us.
“This team is under pressure to play better and that it will benefit from some new ideas and some fresh thinking. He is very highly respected in the game, he is an excellent coach and he wants to help players and coaches get better.
“This team is looking for something because, in both forms of the game that we’ve played this season, we’ve been a little bit lacking. We hope this is the start of something that can give us a little boost - that’s all of us; me, the other coaches and the players.
“I might give a few less throw-downs, but I’ll still be on the field, I’ll be in the dressing room and I’ll be very much responsible for selection and the tactics of the game. Peter will contribute to that, but he just wants to coach the players and help them get better; that’s very much his mantra.
“Working with players and working with teams excites him as a coach and he can come here with no shackles. All he’s got to do is get out there and do what he likes doing; throwing balls, hitting balls, catching balls and talking to people.
“I’m hoping this will inspire the players to improve. Players who see accessible coaching and want to get better will thrive under Peter Moores’ help.”
Newell has ambitious hopes for the second half of the season spanning all three domestic competitions, with retaining their place within the LV= County Championship’s top division a particular priority.
“The T20 competition is still in a state of flux so we’re not too depressed about it, but in four day cricket we’re quite clearly in the bottom two and we want to give ourselves a chance to get out of it,” he said.
“A fresh voice on the coaching staff will help us do that and the other senior coaches, Andy Pick, Wayne Noon and Paul Franks, are eager to learn from Peter Moores as well.
“This is a very home based club - it’s Nottinghamshire people and Nottinghamshire coaches. Peter, although he lives in Nottinghamshire, hasn’t had anything to do with it, and maybe that's a good thing. Maybe we'll benefit from having the opinion of a guy who hasn't been involved in the Club previously.
“Our priority is to stay in Division One and to improve our T20 cricket, then when the 50 over competition starts, we want to have a really good go at that. Those three things are our priority for the next three months.
“We want to do something for the short term. We want to bring a guy in who can improve us now. Our job is to get more out of these players - let’s see if we can get ourselves up the league and playing better cricket.”
