Nottinghamshire and Middlesex had to settle for a draw at Trent Bridge as a combination of rain and bad light on the final day of their LV= County Championship game put paid to any slim hopes of a positive result.
Having started the day on 7 for 0, still 38 runs adrift of Nottinghamshire's first innings total of 419 for 9, Middlesex added another seven runs before persistent drizzle forced an early lunch.
The rain and bad light gave way to an improved afternoon and Middlesex were able to push on thanks to Sam Robson and first innings half centurion James Harris, who had opened the batting the previous evening as a nightwatchman.
Robson, who was dropped at second slip off Jake Ball in the morning, led the way and reached his 50 off 101 balls with nine fours.
He and Harris put on 83 for the first wicket before the former Glamorgan all-rounder was adjudged lbw off the bowling of Harry Gurney. Although Harris was disappointed with the decision, his 44 off 66 balls took his contribution with the bat, in this match, to 117. Nick Compton joined Robson at the crease and Middlesex took tea at 139 for 1.
When bad light forced the players from the field again, the captains eventually shook hands on a draw with Middlesex having reached 162 for 1 with Robson unbeaten on 77 and Compton 36 not out from 68 balls.
"I think a draw was a pretty fair result over the four days," said Nottinghamshire Captain Chris Read. "Today was a bit of a damp squib because we knew we needed a full day's play and a really strong first session to have any chance of forcing a result and it didn't happen.
"With the majority of the first session getting wiped out and with the weather we had over the duration of the game, as well as the nature of the pitch, I think it was always going to be hard to get a result.
"We have got a pretty decent points tally from our last two games here, so we are pleased with the way we have played, as we were last week against Worcestershire. We've just got to hope that this is the start of building something good."
