Jake Libby and Will Root both score centuries as Nottinghamshire’s Seconds took the upper hand after day one of their Championship fixture against MCC Universities at Fenner’s Cricket Club.

Losing the toss and being put in to bat, captain Greg Smith and Libby battled through tough early morning conditions to put their side on the front foot.

Rain ensured both batsmen couldn’t get in to any rhythm with three delays in the opening session but that didn’t seem to bother either of them, Nottinghamshire taking lunch on 75-0 with Smith 39* and Libby 32*.

In the second session the partnership had reached 93 by the 29th over when Smith was caught by Jack Grundy off Matt Milnes for 48.

Two further quick wickets fell, Michael Lumb for five and Sam Wood for 0, but Libby was unmoved, going to a patient fifty off 89 balls.

That was the last of the joy for the hosts’ bowlers though, Libby and Root setting about putting on over 150 for the third wicket.

Root batted with greater freedom than his partner, racing to a 65-ball fifty as well as bringing up the hundred partnership before the tea break, Notts 233-3 at the interval with Libby just short of his century on 98*.

In the final session of the day the partnership continued to flourish with Libby completing his century off 194 balls shortly after the resumption.

Root continued the quick scoring and went to his hundred off just 111 balls, bad light bringing an end to the day on 297-3 with Libby on 124 and Root 110*.
