Nottinghamshire’s seconds bowled out Worcestershire for 243 before falling to 41-5 in reply on the first day of their Second Eleven Championship match at Notts Sports Club.
Ben Kitt got the ball rolling in the sixth over, Alex Hepburn edging through to wicketkeeper Tom Keast for seven.
Then it was the turn of Will Gidman who wreaked havoc before the rain brought a premature end to the morning session.
He took the wickets of George Rhodes (4), Alex Kervezee (5) and Ross Whiteley (0) in a devastating three-wicket burst before lunch, the visitors going to the break on 37-4.
Oliver Westbury and Ed Barnard had taken the score past 50 before the former presented Dominic Brown with an easy catch at square leg off Chris Woakes’ bowling.
Calvin Dickinson helped Barnard guide their side out of trouble, sharing a half-century stand for the sixth wicket.
However, after another rain delay, Dickinson edged through to keeper Keast off Simon Webster for 40, Worcestershire moving to 117-6.
The hosts had two further breakthroughs before the tea break, Kitt removing William Fraine (17) and Adam Tillcock having Benjamin Twohig caught at mid-off.
However, Barnard batted throughout the session to reach 67* by the interval, taking his side to 187-8 after two sessions on day one.
Darrel Williams (18) ensured Barnard had support after the break but when he was bowled by Kitt (3-62) and Liam Smith fell for 0, Barnard was left stranded on 90* as Worcestershire were all out for 234, Gidman the pick of the bowlers with 3-38 off 20 overs.
Nottinghamshire, with 18 overs to face before the close, replied with Anuj Dal and Jake Libby but the visitors served up a devastating opening spell which left Notts reeling at 5-4.
Notts lost Libby and Dal, both bowled for one, before Barnard then took two wickets with the last two balls of the fifth over, removing Will Root and Woakes without scoring.
Tom Moores joined Gidman and the former had added 16 to rescue the early situation before he was the 15th and final wicket the fall on the day, trapped LBW by Whiteley.
Tillcock (0*) joined Gidman (14*) and the pair negotiated the remaining overs safely, closing on 41-5, Barnard adding to his batting efforts by taking 3-15 off seven overs.
