Stunning centuries from Dan Christian and Greg Smith weren’t enough for Nottinghamshire’s second eleven, who fell to a 25-run Duckworth-Lewis defeat against Derbyshire at the 3aaa County Ground.
Rain severely interrupted play in the second innings which saw Derbyshire needing to chase down 379. Play was halted in the 32nd with Derbyshire on 244-2 and the teams never returned to the field.
Nottinghamshire Notts 2nds won the toss and chose to bat first with Greg Smith and Tom Moores opening. Greg Smith was comfortable, positive and destructive all afternoon, notching up 138 off 132 balls and lasting until the 48th over when he was caught at cover by Godleman off the bowling of Antonio Palladino.
Dan Christian scored a staggering 115 off just 47 balls including fourteen fours and six sixes, which really upped the run rate in the middle overs. Sam Wood also added 71 off 73.
Nottinghamshire entered the 48th on 356-2, however a dramatic collapse saw four wickets fall in the last two overs. First Smith fell, followed by Christian three balls later caught by Palladino off the bowling of Jonathan Clare.
Will Gidman and Will Root, both succumbed to the bowling of Harry White, Leaving a target of 379 for the hosts.
With the clouds gathering overhead, Derbyshire came out and batted with the rain in mind. Openers Ben Slater and Billy Godleman notched up 99 runs off the first 11 overs.
Slater was then trapped lbw by Root in the 18th over for a handy 72 off 76. Root kept up his good form with the ball taking Clare, caught by Christian for just three.
However it was eventual man of the match Billy Godleman who accelerated with the bat for Derbyshire, scoring an unbeaten 123 off just 88 balls which would win the match.
Play was halted in the 32nd over and the teams never returned due to terrible conditions, at which point the Duckworth Lewis system was put in place, concluding that the home side had won by 25 runs.
