England Lions secured their second victory of their ODI series against South Africa A after a high-scoring contest in Kimberley. A one-day career-best 141 from Jason Roy was matched equally by talented opener Reeza Hendricks to ensure that the Lions’ considerable total of 376 was challenged well.
Roy’s 141 was aided with handy contributions from James Vince and Alex Lees. Vince fell agonisingly one run shy of his century, the third wicket stand worth 198 to the Lions total.
“It’s been fantastic,” said Roy, speaking after his innings proved the difference between the two sides.
“We got a good total for them to chase, and the bowlers came out firing. They got off to a hell of a start so we really had to dig in, and we got over the line.”
“I felt really good, the pitch was beautiful early on, and I had good partnerships with Alex Lees and then Vincey.”
Liam Plunkett took three wickets to peg back the hosts, with Harry Gurney and Mark Wood picking up two each, while Stephen Parry’s couple left him with England’s most economical figures.
“His change of pace was awesome, and he dragged the ball back, but all the bowlers take credit for the win because they stuck at it so well, even though they went for a few boundaries,” added Roy, speaking of the Lancashire spinner, before praising the innings from Hendricks that threatened to derail the Lions.
“That was a proper knock.
“He played some great shots, it was great to watch. Him and Elgar were awesome. But we go on to Potch, it’s all good, happy days.”
