England’s Ashes Player Of The Series Joe Root has described the hundred he scored at Trent Bridge as ‘extremely satisfying’ when the hosts won by an innings and 78 runs to regain the urn.
Root, after Stuart Broad has dismantled Australia with 8-15 in their total of 60 all out, scored 130 in the first innings allowing England to declare on 391-9, a lead of 331.
And the England vice-captain believes they were some of his best runs of the 460 he scored during the Ashes, given the situation in the series.
“I thoroughly enjoyed scoring those runs at Trent Bridge,” Root said.
“With the situation of the series and having bowled them out for 60, to be able to extend the lead past 150 on the first day was extremely satisfying.
“It is something that will stick in my mind for a long time.
“Everyone chipped in during the Ashes, whether it be with a crucial innings, a great spell or a brilliant catch.
“Every little thing has turned out to be very important to us winning the urn and everyone in the dressing room should be extremely proud of what they have achieved.”
Rested from the forthcoming white-ball cricket against Australia, Root can afford to take stock and look back on what has been an exceptional summer for both him and the squad.
“It has been a brilliant summer from the entire squad, starting against New Zealand and carrying that good work throughout the Ashes,” he said.
“The guys have worked exceptionally hard and deserve all the plaudits as every single member of the team deserve it.
“It is obviously tough coming out of a loss like at the Oval but we have played some really good cricket that we can be proud of and we have thoroughly deserved the urn back.
“That is credit to all the hard work and dedication the lads have put in, the hours in the nets and all the work we have done together as a group.
“I am chuffed to bits to be part of this team.”
