A battling knock from Will Root and an unbeaten fifty from Anuj Dal guided Nottinghamshire’s Seconds to a hard fought draw in their three-day friendly with Derbyshire at Notts Sports Club.
The visitors began the final day on 13-0 in their second innings, a lead of 139, with Ben Slater on nine and George Sellers unbeaten on four.
The latter couldn’t add to his overnight score as he shouldered arms to a Luke Wood delivery and lost his middle stumps.
Greg Oldfield joined Slater and had added 17 before an attempted sweep proved his downfall, LBW to Adam Tillcock with the score moving to 56-2.
Slater and Tom Knight then went about setting up a Derbyshire declaration, the former going to a composed 102-ball fifty whilst the latter brought up the milestone in nearly a quarter of the time, off just 27 balls.
The visitors eventually declared on 172-2, a lead of 298 with Slater finishing on 78 and Knight 61 not out.
Set a target of 299 with 66 overs left in the day, the hosts lost Greg Smith to the fourth ball of the innings, LBW to Tommy Taylor without scoring.
Jake Libby (12*) and Sam Wood (0*) batted through the next three overs unscathed to go to the lunch break on 12-1.
Derbyshire started the second session on a high, Jonathan Steel removing Wood for five when an attempted pull from the left-hander was caught at mid-off.
Taylor then returned to cause more early damage, Libby LBW for 16 and Will Gidman caught by Knight for four, Notts falling to 38-4.
Dal joined Root and the pair got to work in rebuilding after the early wickets, bringing up a 50 partnership in the 22nd over.
However, Root’s dismissal on 32 brought a further flurry of wickets giving Derbyshire renewed hope of pushing for a victory.
Root was LBW to Will Davis before Adam Tillcock, Tom Moores and Luke Wood all fell to Tom Milnes to leave Notts teetering on 98-8.
Dal found good support from Tom Keast to take the score up to 126 in the 32nd over before the latter was caught at gully by Davis off Steel for ten.
Dal was unmoved and completed a hard fought fifty from 77 balls, now accompanied at the crease by Matt Carter who breezed along to 23.
The pair had taken the score to 173-9 when rain curtailed the afternoon session and tea was taken, Dal unbeaten on 58.
Prospects of play looked unlikely after the interval and there was no letup in the rain, with the game abandoned as a draw with no further play taking place.
