Will Gidman scored 72 as Nottinghamshire enjoyed the better of the opening day against Leicestershire in the Second XI Championship.

The all-rounder faced 134 balls having arrived at the crease with the score on 192-4, striking eight boundaries in a knock that provided the backbone of the home side’s 364-9 declared at Notts Sports Club.

The former Gloucestershire man added 109 for the sixth wicket with Adam Tillcock who scored 54, while Rob Taylor took 6-65 for the visitors.

Leicestershire then closed the day on 37-2 - Luke Fletcher and Luke Wood having exchanged early wickets to put Nottinghamshire in the box seat with two days to go.

Nottinghamshire won the toss and elected to bat under blue Nottingham sky and the opening partnership between captain Greg Smith (35) and Jake Libby (49) posted 72 prior to each falling lbw to Taylor.

Taylor also removed Sam Wood (24), caught at second slip by Michael Burgess; and the theme of batsmen not capitalising on starts continued with Will Root (25) and Dan Christian (34) falling against the spin of Jigar Naik and the medium pace of Tom Wells respectively.

Gidman and Tillcock batted the home side into the ascendancy, reaching their respective fifties in 84 and 71 deliveries respectively in a stand that lasted 24.5 overs either side of the Tea break.

They each fell in identical fashion, caught at cover off Taylor, meaning the Leicestershire left-armer had completed a five wicket haul, and the declaration soon followed.

Notts had 11 overs during which to hunt early breakthroughs, and the wicket of Eben Kurtz duly arrived, lbw to Fletcher off the third ball of the innings.

The penultimate over saw Lewis Hill also trapped in-front, this time off the bowling of Luke Wood, with Tom Cullen (0*) and former Derbyshire left-hander Dan Redfern (26*) the two unbeaten batsmen at the close.
