Having named Ashton Agar as the solitary spinner, and hinted that Joe Burns will open the batting alongside David Warner, Australia’s team for the forthcoming glut of white ball cricket is starting to take shape.
Led by Steven Smith following the post ICC Cricket World Cup retirement of Michael Clarke, the 15-man squad includes just five of the Investec Ashes squad, of which only three - Smith, Warner and Mitchell Starc - played in the recent fourth Test at Trent Bridge. Mitchell Johnson and Josh Hazlewood have been rested.
"The squad we have selected has a few fresh faces in it as well as some experienced players that will provide us with the right balance,'' the selection chairman Rod Marsh said.
"Joe has impressed us immensely over in India with Australia A.
“He is a very capable young batsman who has experience opening, and we think he will grab his opportunity with the white ball during this series.
"Ashton has performed very well with the ball since his return from shoulder surgery including taking five wickets in the recent Australia A game in India,” Marsh added.
“He has played in these conditions over here before and the National Selection Panel believes he has a very bright future.”
With Royal London One-Day Internationals scheduled for the Ageas Bowl, Lord’s, Headingley and two fixtures at Emirates Old Trafford, followed by a one-off NatWest T20 International in Cardiff, Agar will not get to return to the scene of his finest hour in international cricket to date.
It was with the bat that the left-arm spinner took centre stage during the 2013 Investec Ashes Test at Trent Bridge, scoring 98, a world record for a number 11.
He played one more Test before losing his place in the side, only for an impressive Sheffield Shield campaign - together with recent performances for Australia A - to plant him back into the minds of the selection panel.
The man to benefit from James Faulkner’s four match suspension, meanwhile, is Victoria, Melbourne Stars and Delhi Daredevils all-rounder Marcus Stoinis, completing a remarkable turnaround having lost his state contract during the season of 2011/12.
“Marcus has performed very well in India during the four day series and we have always liked that option of the extra allrounder in our side, so with James Faulkner's unavailability, this is a great opportunity for Marcus.”
On the decision to rest Johnson and Hazlewood, Marsh pointed to the heavy workload of two recent series in the five day arena.
"After Test matches both here and in the West Indies, we have opted to give both of those fast bowlers the opportunity to have a pre-season build-up in the lead-up to what will be another busy Australian season."
