Notts Outlaws meet Somerset in the Royal London One Day Cup at Trent Bridge on Tuesday (10.30am start).
Both sides got their 50-over campaign off to winning starts on Sunday. Notts triumphed by 29-runs against Sussex Sharks at Horsham, whilst Somerset pulled off an astonishing 5-wicket victory over Durham at Taunton.
Durham had made 311-7 in their innings and reduced the home county to 106-5. James Hildreth (146 not out) and Lewis Gregory (105 not out) then combined in a new world record 6th-wicket partnership of 209 to clinch the win with 20 balls to spare.
Head To Head
In all forms of List-A cricket (ranging from 40 to 60 over contests) Notts and Somerset have met on 56 occasions.
Notts have won 21 of the meetings and Somerset 31. There have been two No Results, one abandonment and one tie (Taunton 1998).
There have been 28 meetings in Nottinghamshire, all at Trent Bridge except the 1970 clash which the home county won at Elm Avenue, Newark, by 4 wickets.
Notts have completed eleven victories on home soil (1970, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1998, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2012, 2013), with Somerset winning 15 matches, with two No Results.
Last Time
Last September Notts beat Somerset at Trent Bridge by 8 wickets in the semi final of the Yorkshire Bank 40 competition.
Put in, Somerset lost their inspirational captain Marcus Trescothick in the first over to herald the start of an indifferent performance with the bat.
From 90-4 they lost their last 6 wickets for the addition of only a further 29 runs to fall for just 119 in only 25.4 overs.
Jake Ball, who was given the man of the match award, returned figures of 4-25, whilst there were also excellent performances from Steven Mullaney (3-35) and Ajmal Shahzad (2-23). Gurney, who had removed Trescothick at the start, ended with 1-11 from his four overs.
Notts easily chased down the target, in only 16.2 overs. Michael Lumb, with 46, and Alex Hales, 5, were the two to be dismissed but James Taylor (20 not out) and Samit Patel (43 not out) saw Notts through to the Lord’s Final with an unbroken stand of 60.
History
The most famous meeting between the two counties took place at Lord’s on 24 July 1992 at Lord’s, when they met in the Benson and Hedges Cup Final.
A Somerset side, containing the legendary trio of Richards, Botham and Garner, skittled Notts out for just 130 in 50.1 overs.
Mike Hendrick took the only wicket to fall, that of Peter Denning, as unbeaten fifties from Viv Richards and Peter Roebuck eased the south west county to a convincing 9-wicket victory.
Notts’ highest score v Somerset in one-day matches came at Taunton in 2002 when they hit 296-7 in a 45 overs per side day/night Norwich Union League match. Kevin Pietersen made 147 for the Robin Hood county in their 59-run success.
The highest score on home soil came in a pulsating Benson and Hedges Cup match in 1993, which Somerset won by 1 wicket, hitting the winning boundary from the final ball of the match after Notts had posted 279-6.
Pietersen holds the highest individual score, home and away, against the Cider Men. His 147 in 2002 was nearly beaten the following year, when he scored 141 not out in a triumph by 35 runs.
There have only been four Somerset one-day centuries registered in Nottingham. Vivian Richards scored two of them, 117 not out in 1983 and 108 not out, nine years earlier. Jamie Cox hit 101 in 1999 and Craig Kieswetter made 100 three years ago.
Eddie Hemmings has the best figures by a Notts bowler against Somerset. In 1982 at the Recreation Ground in Bath, the off-spinner claimed 5-44.
Chris Tolley’s 4-24 in 1997 is the best at Trent Bridge.
Two years ago at Taunton Pakistan spinner Abdur Rehman collected a haul of 6-16 when the sides met in the west country, the best Somerset analysis in the series of matches.
Played For Them Both
Medium-fast bowler Simon Francis began his career with Hampshire but moved to Somerset in 2002. He played 40 times for the Taunton side, claiming 105 wickets.
Francis left the ‘Cider County’ at the end of the 2006 campaign but was taken on by Notts the following June. His two matches v Derbyshire and Gloucestershire, both at Trent Bridge, were the final ones of his first class career and brought just one wicket. He also appeared in two t20 games for Notts.
Others to have played for both Nottinghamshire and Somerset in recent years include Matt Wood, Ben Phillips, Neil Edwards and Kevin O’Brien.

Mike Taylor played for Notts between 1964 and 1972 before leaving to joining Hampshire. During a similar period Mike’s twin brother, Derek, was Somerset’s wicket-keeper.
The brothers were born in Amersham, Bucks in 1942 and given the respective initials MNS and DJS – in each case the S stands for Somerset!
