Chris Read will captain Notts Outlaws in Royal London One-Day Cup matches against Kent, Surrey and Durham in the absence of James Taylor.
Taylor and Alex Hales will play throughout England Lions’ triangular series against New Zealand A and Sri Lanka A while Harry Gurney’s single appearance for the national second string at Taunton on Wednesday means he will not miss any competitive cricket for Notts.
Read elected to surrender the 50-over captaincy at the start of the season having stepped away from T20 captaincy in 2011. He has continued to serve as captain of Nottinghamshire’s LV= County Championship side since being elected in 2008.
“Chris is happy to do it and we felt that he was the natural choice given his experience in the role,” said Nottinghamshire Director of Cricket.
“He has always been one of the leaders in the dressing room whether he is captaining in a given format or not and now is not the time to experiment with new captains given the strong start we’ve made in the competition.”
Newell has already decided to included homegrown duo Sam Wood and Sam Kelsall in the team and hopes them to use this run of games to catch the eye.
“Sam Kelsall will open the batting and Sam Wood will come into the side and they will be given three consecutive games,” said Newell.
“Sam Kelsall has been in good form for the second eleven and it’s an ideal scenario to have a form player coming into a winning side.”
