England are well on top going into the fifth day of the final test match against New Zealand today, but the match looks set to end in a draw thanks to rain, the home side electing to bat again while the follow-on was available.
Batsman Jonathan Trott has defended the side’s approach to the match.
“I think we got it spot on,” he said.
“We set out to get the total we wanted and achieved it in the time we wanted”
Rain looks set to ravage the fifth day’s play, with New Zealand reduced to 158-6 thanks largely to Nottinghamshire’s Graeme Swann, who took four wickets for 61 and Stuart Broad, who dismissed opener Peter Fulton for just five runs.
“We’re in a good position. Hopefully we’ll get a couple of hours play and do the business,” said Trott.
“When you are 1-0 up you can afford to let the game take its course,”
“You don’t let the weather dictate how you play the game,” he added.
“When you are on top you want to stay on top and make it difficult for them playing last.”
“To get six wickets is a good day of Test Cricket. We need four wickets to win the series and win a Test match.”
England will face New Zealand in the third NatWest Series One Day International at Trent Bridge on Wednesday 5 June.
