The cricketers of Nottinghamshire and Sussex met for the first time this season back in April in the final of the Emirates Airlines T20 competition in Dubai. Since then they have trodden a similar path in the LV= County Championship, with only nine points separating them going into the final round of fixtures this week.
Notts returned from the Middle East with the trophy but it was Sussex who had the better of things when the sides met in the Division One clash at Hove in May, with a nine wicket victory. The match highlights included a splendid 93 in the first innings from the home side’s Chris Nash, Andre Adams’ 500th career wicket and the unfortunate broken arm sustained by Neil Edwards.
There have been 105 previous championship meetings between Notts and Sussex at Trent Bridge, with the home side holding a 30-15 advantage, with a further 40 matches being drawn.
Nottinghamshire’s most recent win was in 2009 when Samit Patel recorded then-best figures of 6-84. Prior to that, Jason Gallian’s 199 was the inspiration behind the 2005 victory.
"In 1890 Notts scored 590 at home against their south coast opponents - the largest team total put on here against Sussex, whilst the lowest was 46 in 1902."
Their largest ever win in the fixture came way back in 1895 when they triumphed by an innings and 378 runs. There have been five Nottinghamshire double-hundreds recorded on home soil, with William Gunn doing it twice. The largest of those contributions came way back in 1897 when John Dixon made 268 not out – but the most recent was by Reg Simpson, who hit 216 in 1952.

Last week at Edgbaston Warwickshire had three different centurions during their first innings, this is something that Notts have done on four occasions against Sussex, most recently in 1971 when Graham Frost, Mike Harris and Mike Smedley all reached three figures, out of a total of 416-2 declared.
William Attewell’s 9-23 is the best bowling analysis recorded by a home bowler in the series of matches.
Sussex last couple of wins here have been in 2008 and before that 2006 – when Mushtaq Ahmed took 13 wickets in the match, including a second innings haul of 9-48.
In 1959 a total of 562 was the visitors highest total achieved in Nottingham, whilst a decade ago, openers Richard Montgomerie (160 not out) and Murray Goodwin (203 not out) put on an unbroken first wicket partnership of 372.
Having passed 1,000 first class runs for the season now, Alex Hales just needs 27 more to complete the same landmark in Division One cricket this season. Paul Franks now has 496 first class wickets and Chris Read 49 championship dismissals.
The match is also scheduled to be Charlie Shreck’s final appearance for Nottinghamshire before he moves to join Kent for 2012.
It will be Charlie’s 83rd first class match for Nottinghamshire, for whom he has taken 290 wickets – with a best of 8-31.
Dave Bracegirdle will provide ball-by-ball commentary during Nottinghamshire's LV= County Championship match against Sussex on behalf of BBC Radio Nottingham.
