Notts won the toss and batted first with opener Will Jefferson hitting 24 before his off stump was sent tumbling by Shaun Pollock who also had Adam Voges caught for two by Gordan Muchall.
Chris Cairns treated the Trent Bridge crowd to three sixes on his way to 37 and Chris Read and Bilal Shafayat batted out the innings unbeaten on 13 and one respectively.
