Notts all-rounder Samit Patel fell victim to Andre Nel as England Lions suffered a heavy defeat in their first one day fixture against South Africa.
Patel was caught by for a first ball duck and bowled five overs as the tourists cruised to a four wicket victory with 11 overs remaining.
Lions captain Rob Key was disappointed by the result and performance but hopes to bounce back in the next encounter.
“Whoever you’re playing for, it’s always disappointing to get beaten like that when you know you should have done better because you walk off the field thinking we mucked up today and it should have been a lot tighter than that,” said Key.
“We’re probably more used to that sort of pitch than those guys are. It was a little damp in the morning but even so we should have been a little bit smarter with bat and ball.”
Patel will have a second chance to impress the selectors in a repeat of the fixture at Derbyshire’s County Ground on Saturday when he will be joined in the side by Nottinghamshire team mate Darren Pattinson.
