Brett Hutton struck an unbeaten half-century as the Nottinghamshire lower order fought back on a testing opening day against Sussex in Hove.

Hutton scored 59 and put on 74 with youngster Tom Giles, who himself hit a composed 32, as the Green and Golds reached stumps on 232-9.

Despite Haseeb Hameed and Ben Slater’s fluent opening stand of 47, some tight Sussex bowling saw the hosts put onto the back foot before tea.

However, Hutton and Giles led the resistance to put the visitors within sight of a possible batting bonus point.
