Liam Patterson-White returned career-best bowling figures as Nottinghamshire enjoyed a strong opening day at Division One leaders Essex.

After Patterson-White had claimed 6/43 - his first-ever six-fer in First-Class cricket - to skittle the hosts for 184, Haseeb Hameed made 68 not out as Notts closed on 111-2, just 74 in arrears.

There were also wickets for Fergus O’Neill, Olly Stone, and Brett Hutton - as well as a run-out for Hameed - before an unbroken stand of 56 between Hameed and Joe Clarke saw Notts to stumps.
