The South Africa international's unerring accuracy saw Sam Evans edge behind for 62, the opener having built a promising second-wicket partnership with Lewis Hill.
Two balls later, Paterson removed Nikhil Gorantla, before returning later to claim the prized wicket of centurion Hill, caught in the cordon by Sam Seecharan for 123.
The right-armer completed his six-wicket haul by taking the final three wickets of the innings, with Jordan Neil, James Hayes and Freddie McCann also chipping in as the visitors made 353.
In reply, openers Haseeb Hameed and Ben Slater negotiated the final four overs of the day to reach stumps on 10/0.
