Toby Pettman made inroads into the Lancashire middle-order as Notts attempted to restrict the size of their potential fourth-innings chase in the Second XI Championship fixture at Lady Bay.
Pettman saw off Subhaan Mahmood, skipper George Bell and Cian Dickinson to finish day three with figures of 3/27, with James Hayes bowling opener George Balderson for a single-figure score before returning to remove Ben Walkden.
Lancashire reached the close on 144/6, a lead of 158 runs, after the hosts were dismissed for 186 earlier in the day.
There was time for captain Matthew Montgomery to complete his half-century before he was one of three victims to fall to Balderson, while Hayes contributed a useful 34 before being run out.
