Fateh Singh’s counterpunching 71 was the key contribution with the bat as Nottinghamshire’s U18s secured a one-wicket win over Yorkshire in a 50-over encounter at Lady Bay.

Singh, batting at six, put together a proactive, aggressive 59-ball innings, hoicking seamers Louie Owens and Charlie McMurran into the leg-side for sixes and advancing from the crease to punish any deviation in length from spinner Joshua Hoyle.

The all-rounder maintained his attacking intent despite the loss of partners Sam Seecharan (32 from 40 balls), Sam Watson (7) and Drew Sylvester (11), taking the hosts to 176/8 by the time he departed to the right-arm pace of George Booth.

Singh’s contribution, allied to a positive 45-ball stay at the crease from opener Travis Holland that yielded 42 runs, took Notts to within 20 of victory with two wickets in hand. And, despite the loss of Farhan Ahmed for eight, last-wicket pair Faizan Minhas and Thomas Giles were able to complete the task at hand, Giles hitting the winning runs with 11 overs to spare.

It was Giles who had made the early breakthrough in Yorkshire’s innings, cleaning up captain Matty Weston for 16.

There was a scalp for right-armer Abneer Irfan and two for Ahmed, but spinner Freddie McCann was most responsible for checking the momentum of the Yorkshire middle order.

First Noah Kelly was pinned for six, before Harry Finch (1) lost his stumps whilst attempting an audacious scoop over the wicketkeeper’s head.

Noah Priestley (1) also failed to pick the off-spinner as Yorkshire, having won the toss, compiled 194/8 from their 50 overs.
