Chris Gibson, Kashif Ali and Matt Carter all made telling contributions as Nottinghamshire's Second XI had the better of day one against Lancashire.

After losing the toss, Notts were asked to bat first with Chris Gibson and Ben Compton opening the innings.

Compton was the first man out for 19 as he edged Danny Lamb to keeper Brooke Guest.

He was soon joined back in the pavilion by Lyndon James (8) who chased a leg-side ball from George Burrows and edged a catch to Guest behind the stumps.

After Joey Evison (6) was run out by former England man Owais Shah, Notts enjoyed a fruitful partnership as Kashif Ali joined Chris Gibson at the crease.

The pair ran between the wickets well and punished any short-pitched bowling as Gibson continued his recent good form with the bat, cruising passed 50 before being bowled by Jack Morley for 62.

Matt Carter then joined forces with Ali and the pair went on to punish the tiring Lancashire attack, allowing Nottinghamshire to declare on 222-4; Kashif Ali not out 64 and Matt Carter not out 47.

Fielding was caught at long-leg by Jack Blatherwick off Zak Chappell and Jack Blatherwick accounted for Shah (25) edging to Lyndon James at slip.

Blatherwick was bowling a fierce spell and claimed two more wickets before stumps were called. He bowled Balderson for six and then had Ben Guest (10) caught by Compton.

Lancashire head into the final day on 99-4, trailing by 123 runs.
