Notts Outlaws’ penultimate fixture of the Royal London One-Day Cup group stage against Durham was washed out at Grantham Cricket Club.
After early morning rain, there was a brief break in the poor weather as Steven Mullaney won the toss and had decided to bowl first.
However, just before the players were due to take the field, the rain set in and didn’t relent until shortly before the umpires made the decision to call off the game at 3.40pm owing to insufficient time to ready the playing area for cricket on the day.
“We came and trained here yesterday and - speaking to the groundsman - they had prepared a great pitch and done all the work,” said Notts Outlaws Head Coach Peter Moores.
“It seems so unfair that they had a big showpiece game and the weather came and spoiled it.”
The Outlaws remain top of the North Group, leading second placed Lancashire by one point with one game remaining, against Northamptonshire on Monday. Durham, meanwhile, are in third position on nine points with one match to play.
“It’s going to go down to the wire,” added Moores.
“It’s that sort of table this year, very jammed up at the top and it will come down to the last game.
“We know, if we can get a win at Northampton, it will guarantee us a home semi-final, which is the main thing for us to focus on.”
Nottinghamshire's Second Eleven Trophy match against Warwickshire at Worksop also was abandoned without a ball bowled.
