Nottinghamshire’s Women bounced back strongly from defeat by Kent on Sunday to record victory over Middlesex on bank holiday Monday, a success built on an excellent team performance.
Batting first, Notts did not have it all their own way as they were reduced to 0-1, 10-2, 44-3, 57-4 and 105-6 at various points in their innings.
But a fine 54 from Jodie Dibble proved to be the backbone of the innings and she was well supported by Megan Burton’s 23 not out in a total of 167-8.
Burton, Amy Gauvrit (10) and Hannah Hughes (10) contributed 43 runs between them at eight, nine and 10, while Middlesex would have been disappointed to bowl 34 wides.
In reply, other players came to the fore to help Notts defend their total and ultimately win by 28 runs.
Spinners Lucy Higham (2-33) and Kirstie Gordon (4-31) did much of the damage while opening bowlers Sonia Odedra (2-31) and Sophie Munro (2-20) were also in the wickets.
Gordon’s four-wicket haul took her to 21 wickets (at 7.43) for the 2018 season, making her the leading wicket taker in Division One so far. She also went to 50 wickets in all cricket (One-Day and T20) for Nottinghamshire since joining in 2016.
Opener Natasha Miles scored 27 for Middlesex, but no other visiting player passed 20 as they were bowled out for 139.
Against Kent, Notts had again batted first and were indebted to a superb knock of 88 by Odedra, while Teresa Graves chipped in with 29 in a total of 160-8.
But the home side suffered from a disappointing day in the field, despite Gordon knocking over England’s Tammy Beaumont (30), to go along with Fran Wilson, Amy Jones and Suzie Bates (New Zealand) as other internationals she has dismissed this summer.
Munro bowled Chelsey Rowson for 10, but no-one could dislodge Alice Davidson-Richards (56 not out) and Laura Marsh (51 not out), who put on an unbeaten 104 for the third wicket to steer Kent home.
Next up for Notts is a trip to play Yorkshire at Harrogate CC next Sunday, their final one-day fixture before moving on to T20 cricket.
