The Kiwis moved their overnight total from 229-4 to 233-4 as Henry Nicholls went to his half centuy and he is 52 not out going into day four.
After England were bowled out for 58 on day one, New Zealand are now 175 runs in front, with better weather forecast for the final two days of the match.
