Peter Moores complimented the strength of the Surrey side after Notts fell to an innings defeat in their Specsavers County Championship meeting at the Kia Oval.
Surrey bowled Notts out for just 149 on the third day, to complete the victory, leaving Moores to pay credit to the home side’s bowling attack.
“They are playing really good cricket,” he said. “They are confident and have a strong bowling attack.
“We’d be disappointed with how we batted first innings but all credit to them , they’ve bowled very well in this match.”
Morne Morkel took three of the wickets to fall on the third morning, giving him five in the match – and 14 in the two meetings against Notts this season.
“You know exactly what you are going to get against him,” reflected Moores.
“He’s running in really well at the moment, in good rhythm and at top pace. He’s getting the ball in the right area as well, so it’s been a tough challenge for our batsmen against someone of his ability.
“The rest of the attack also did well, so all credit to them. McKerr got wickets in the first innings – but not necessarily with his best balls but I thought in the second innings he tightened up a little bit.
“Curran and Clarke also bowled very well in the first innings,” added the Head Coach.
Notts were dismissed twice in the match for a total of 250 runs with only Kraigg Brathwaite making a significant contribution with a second innings half century.
“It’s been a good pitch here, so credit to the groundsman. You had to play well to get in and score runs on it.
“I said to the lads that ‘you can’t hide’. In the first innings I didn’t think we batted very well at all and played some loose shots.
“It wasn’t a wicket that you could drive on outside the off stump. We did that in the first innings and paid the penalty. Second innings we got bowled out by a good attack and can’t have too many complaints.
“But we’ve got to keep our confidence up, do our work and the next match means an opportunity for someone to stand up and get some runs. We’ve got to try and get ourselves going and get a win.”
