Chris Read will not play for Notts Outlaws in this year’s NatWest T20 Blast – but is instead ‘excited’ to be part of the Club’s coaching team for the competition.
With the 38-year-old retiring at the end of the season after two decades at Trent Bridge, the move will allow the Club to look to the future, with Tom Moores to wear the wicket-keeping gloves for the game at Yorkshire Vikings tomorrow (Friday 6.30pm).
The decision has been made after discussions this week between Read and Head Coach Peter Moores.
“Chris and I have had a chat and we agree that this a great fit for everyone as we prepare for a T20 campaign where we hope we can go out and win,” said Moores.
“The thinking is that it allows us to plan ahead for the future, with Chris due to retire in September, yet it enables Chris to pass on his vast experience and knowledge to our players. He’s excited about taking on this new role.
“It’s a good opportunity for him to develop his coaching skills and allows Chris to rest and recharge his batteries after a very busy period, so he’ll be fresh and ready to captain the side when the County Championship matches restart in August.
“As a squad, we can’t wait for the T20 to start because we feel we have a squad capable of going all the way. In addition to the players who did so well in the 50-over competition, we have two overseas players, in Dan Christian and Ish Sodhi, who will only strengthen the group.”
