The excellence of Billy Root helped Nottinghamshire get their Second XI Trophy campaign off to a flyer against Leicestershire at Lady Bay.
Root’s 123 off 137 balls ensured that Ant Botha’s side were successful by two wickets in the 50-over fixture with a solitary delivery to spare.
Nottinghamshire found themselves chasing 258 to win after Liam Patterson-White and Matthew Carter each took two wickets. Tom Wells top-scored with 78 for the visitors.
Although the home slide slipped to 33-2 early in their response, Brendan Taylor – on his return from the finger injury he sustained in Barbados – steadied the ship with 44 in a partnership of 92 with Root.
The Outlaws needed 13 more to win from 11 deliveries when Root became the eighth wicket to fall. Matt Milnes (3*) and Carter (6*) held their nerve to secure the win.
