Young people in Nottingham are being offered free cricket sessions at two city locations throughout the summer – with Outlaws all-rounder Samit Patel set to attend the launch event on Thursday.
Youngsters aged between eight and 15 are welcome to attend the session, which will take place between 12pm and 2pm based at the Cricket Pavilion on Victoria Embankment.
The launch event will then be followed by regular evening sessions through June & July, on Wednesdays at the Forest Recreation Ground and Thursdays on the Embankment.
The initiative, being delivered by Nottinghamshire Cricket Board in partnership with national cricket participation charity Chance To Shine and the Trent Bridge Community Trust, will be based around the concept of ‘tapeball’ cricket. Taping the ball helps it to swing, making the cricket more exciting to play.
The initiative is hoping to attract youngsters from all backgrounds into cricket with a further programme for 16-25 year-old’s set to be launched in September.
This will benefit the young people in terms of making them active, as well as promoting aspiration and using the unique heritage of cricket to promote values of fair play and respect.
Each session will feature a competitive edge with leaderboards inaugurated for skills such as the fastest bowler, biggest hitter and leading wicket taker.
The initiative could eventually see a team of youngsters play a competitive ‘Tapeball’ fixture against Leicestershire.
