As local rivals Derbyshire Falcons travel to Trent Bridge for the bumper NatWest T20 Blast, Andre Russell’s first assignment for the Notts Outlaws will to help secure victory in the mouth-watering encounter.
In a match that attracted a record-breaking crowd of 13,582 in 2015, nerves will be put the test and names can be made from putting in a match-turning performance.
Last year it was down to Jake Ball and Harry Gurney to bowl the final overs, securing a thrilling two-run victory.
This year, West Indian all-rounder Russell plays his first match of a four-game stint for the Outlaws and will be looking to bring the skills that have turned him in to a perennial trophy winner to Nottinghamshire.
However, the 28-year-old and the rest of the Outlaws will have to deal with a Derbyshire side that have lost just once in white ball cricket in 2016.
The Falcons also turn up with a healthy contingent of New Zealand players, as Hamish Rutherford, Jimmy Neesham and Neil Broom all form part of the Derbyshire plans over the coming season.
Rutherford, the Falcons’ overseas star during 2015, will aim to get the innings off to a flier, much like he did in both T20s against the Outlaws last year, with scores of 62 off 47 and 37 off 20.
The New Zealander has played 84 T20s in his career, striking his 1,979 runs at 141.55, with an average of 25.05 and nine half centuries.
The left-hander comes in to the game having scored 104 against Worcestershire in the Royal London One-Day Cup victory earlier in the week.
A proven wicket taker at the top of the innings, Russell could be employed from the off with the ball and will be keen to get amongst the Falcons early on.
His 182 T20 wickets have come every 19.3 balls, and the explosive all-rounder will be crucial to the Outlaws’ white ball run over the next couple of weeks, starting with Rutherford and co. on Friday night.
