Nottinghamshire’s Second XI fell to an eight-wicket defeat at the hands of Derbyshire at Worksop College yesterday, courtesy of former Outlaw Scott Elstone.

Rain enforced a delayed start to the 50-over game, which meant a reduction in overs to 43 a side.

Derbyshire won the toss, elected to field and got off to the best of starts, another former Nottinghamshire man Andrew Carter taking the wicket of Sam Wood (1) in the first over.

In the 8th over, the Outlaws lost two in consecutive balls as Will Root (27) was immediately followed by Chris Read (0) of the bowling of Tom Milnes, leaving the score at 40-3.

Will Gidman and Greg Smith battled through to a 50 partnership before Smith (33) was bowled as he attempted to reverse-sweep Wes Durston.

Despite promising contributions from Will Gidman (33), Anuj Dal (35) and Luke Wood (25), the Outlaws innings eventually stuttered to 191-8, as Carter produced the standout bowling figures of 3-37.

Derbyshire’s reply took a blow in the 4th over when Tattershall was dismissed by Jack Blatherwick for 7.

Five overs later, Durston joined him back in the pavilion for 19, leaving the visitors 44-2.

Charlie MacDonnell joined Elstone at the crease and, as the 50 partnership came up in the 24th over, so did the Derbyshire hundred.

Both batsmen completed their personal fifties in 78 balls as the Falcons closed in on victory.

Elstone, who closed on 85* off 111 balls, had the pleasure of striking the winning boundary for an eight wicket Derbyshire win, with just shy of five overs to spare.
