Nottinghamshire Seconds continued from where they left off in the second day of their Championship match with MCC Universities and bowled the away side out for 122.
The Seconds proceeded not to enforce the follow-on and instead amassed 165 in their second innings before declaring – Sam Wood, Joe Barrett and Will Root all making useful contributions – with the MCCU ending the day on 37-1 and chasing a 359-run deficit.
The action resumed at Lady Bay with the MCCU 20-0 off nine overs and Hassan Azad (13) and Alex Thomson (6) both not out.
But it didn’t take long for the Seconds to get their breakthrough; in the 16th over Thomson was caught at mid-off by Sam Wood off Matt Milnes (38-1) and the next over saw the dismissal of Tom Cullen (3), who was clean bowled by Ben Kitt, with the score 41-2.
Azad exited shortly after, caught behind for 19, and Basil Akram, who tried to play a leg-side ball from Kitt in the 21st over, was caught by Keast (44-4) and the visitors reached 50 in the 23rd over – the next over, however, witnessed Lowen (7) out lbw to Anuj Dal (50-5).
Matthew Norris and Robert Sehmi achieved a sixth-wicket partnership of 30 by the 33rd over, but the latter was bowled by Dominic Brown and his replacement, Jack McIver, was caught at deep square-leg by Alex Aldred off Ben Kitt in the 39th over (90-7).
The end was in sight for the Seconds after lunch and, by the 49th over, Matthew Norris (16) had been dismissed and so too had Keon Harding, with the score 109-9.
Jack Grundy was the final man to go (2) as he was caught by Will Root at slip in the 55th over, with the MCCU all out for 122 and Bobby Gamble unbeaten on 13.
Nottinghamshire, with a lead of 231, did not opt for the follow-on and opened their second innings with Sam Wood and Joe Barrett; the 50 came in the 10th over but, in the 13th, Wood (44) was bowled by Bobby Gamble (62-1), with skipper Will Root coming in.
The 100 was reached in the 23rd over and at tea the score was 106-1 (24 overs), Barrett on 36 and Root on 21, Nottinghamshire leading by 337 runs.
Their 50-partnership was reached in the 27th over (115-1) and Barrett completed his half-century (122 balls, five fours, one six) in the 37th (137-1).
The home side racked up the 150 in the 41st over and Root completed his 50 (74 balls, five fours) with a four off the second ball of the 42nd (155-1), but on the fourth ball Barrett (56) was adjudged lbw to Alex Thomson (156-2).
Anuj Dal joined Root and, after 44 overs, Nottinghamshire declared on 165-2 – with Root 55 not out and Dal undefeated on five.
The MCCU took the field requiring 397 to win, ten overs still left in the day, Hassan Azad and Alex Thomson opening the batting.
In the seventh over Thomson (16) edged a ball from Ben Kitt to keeper Tom Keast, the score 31-1, and nightwatchman Jack Grundy came in.
The away side ended the day on 37-1 after 10 overs, Azad not out 19 and Grundy yet to score.
