Having watched his opening partner score a maiden One-Day International century in a series-leveling victory on Friday, Jason Roy is hoping to emulate Alex Hales in Sharjah on Tuesday.

The pair have forged an explosive opening partnership in their 12 ODIs together and it was Hales who made the match-winning contribution, smashing 109 in the 95-run second ODI victory.

Now Roy, who made 54 in England’s total of 283-5, is looking to follow Hales’ example and convert his numerous starts in to a telling knock for his country.

"I've just got to kick on now. It's a mindset thing, starting again on 50 - getting there, and then saying 'Right, now I'm on nought',” he said.

"I need to maintain the positive mindset, but then crack on.

"Alex is an outstanding player and has come a long way since starting in the Twenty20 format," Roy continued.

"He got his maiden hundred which was a key task for his trip he said.

"Now he's more than ready. It's just the confidence of knowing you're part of the squad and mentally get ready for what's ahead."

Having been joined at Surrey by the likes of Kumar Sangakkara and Kevin Pietersen over the past few years, Roy has been surrounded by key players to learn from.

As with every cricketer there is a burning desire to play all formats for England however, for now, Roy is looking to cement his place in one day cricket, starting with converting productive starts in to match-winning hundred.

“I think if he [Sangakkara] had been with me the other day when I gave it away on 50 odd he would have been pulling his hair out,” Roy said.

“If anyone can master the game of white ball cricket that’s outstanding, and there’s nothing wrong with being a white ball specialist.

“There are eight players here who are just white ball players and I don’t think you have to be good at all formats.

“If you are then you’re a genius.”
