Alex Hales and James Taylor have been selected for England’s squad ahead of the Royal London One-Day International Series against New Zealand.

The Nottinghamshire duo retain their places in the international setup for the 50-over format having featured in both the ICC Cricket World Cup and the recent fixture against Ireland.

Outlaws fast-bowler Stuart Broad has missed out on selection alongside James Anderson, Ian Bell and Gary Ballance.

Hales, who played in the final two matches of the World Cup campaign, has been in supreme form with the bat so far this season, helping himself to 532 LV= County Championship runs, at an average in excess of 66, from his four completed appearances to date.

The 26-year-old also grabbed the headlines on the opening night of the NatWest T20 Blast competition by striking six successive sixes against the Birmingham Bears, prior to jetting-off for a short stint with the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League.

Taylor, meanwhile, captained his country for the first time in the match against Ireland following a World Cup campaign that saw him average 37.25.

He scored 444 runs at an average of 88.80 in 50-over cricket for Nottinghamshire in 2014, including three hundreds.

“This series presents an excellent opportunity to look at players we believe can play a key role for England over the next four years as we build towards the next ICC Cricket World Cup," said National Selector James Whitaker.

“We have opted to rest Moeen Ali from this series and he will play cricket for Worcestershire in preparation for the Ashes next month.

"A number of players involved in the recent World Cup including James Anderson, Gary Ballance, Ian Bell and Stuart Broad have been left of the squad for this series.

"It is important to point out that none of these players have been ruled out of playing a role for England in limited overs formats in the future.

"This squad allows us to look at a group of players who have performed well both at county and England Lions level in recent years.

“On behalf of the selectors I would like to wish Eoin and Paul Farbrace all the very best for what will no doubt be a highly entertaining series against a very strong New Zealand side.”
