Second Eleven Friendly
Day 3 of 3 Garon Park Southend
Essex (409-6 dec 2nd inns forfeited) beat Notts (1st inns forfeited & 274 by 135 runs

When Notts left the team hotel in Basildon they could have been forgiven in believing that there was little prospect of any play after the washout of the second day.

Rain was falling but when within two miles of the ground there was no sign of rain and a prompt start was forecast.

With so much time lost in the game both teams agreed to forfeit an innings leaving Notts a maximum of 96 overs to reach a target of 410.

However no sooner had the decisions been made than first bad light & then a steady drizzle prevented any play before lunch which was taken early, a start was finally made at 1.15pm.

With only a maximum of 71 overs now remaining Notts were facing a challenge to reach the score required.

Neil Edwards scored 69 including 11 fours and a six, his half century coming from 58 balls but then with the score on 87 steered a short ball straight into the hands of Thornely fielding a third man.

Apart from Ben Phillips, who was not out 62 from just 54 balls with three sixes, and Jake Ball (26), who struck about them adding 72 for the ninth wicket when the cause was about lost, the rest of the batting was indeterminate with no other batsman scoring twenty.

For Essex left a pace man Tymal Mills took 4-64 & left arm spinner Tim Phillips 4-84.
