Second Eleven Championship
Day 3 of 3 at Denby
Nottinghamshire (179 & 345-9 dec) lost to Derbyshire (188 & 337-8) by 2 wickets
Notts 5pts Derbyshire 21pts
Overnight Notts had hopes of making early inroads into the home team’s batting but a combination of good batting by the openers Lineker and Borrington plus some innocuous bowling on a pitch that had seemingly gone to sleep, made the lunchtime curry not so hot for them as Derby dined on 128-1.
The only wicket to fall was that of Matt Lineker who nicked a catch to keeper Sam Kelsall off Jake Ball for 57 seven minutes before the interval.
Things only slightly improved in the afternoon session which saw tea taken on 251-4.
Madsen (31) scored 28 in boundaries before falling lbw to Ball and Martin Weightman trapped Paul Borrington, who had been a stubborn obstacle to Notts hopes,in the same manner offering no shot to a ball that swung in to him. Borrington scored 88 from 181 balls with 16 fours.
Slater fell before tea to an excellent diving catch by Tom Rowe off the bowling of Ben Phillips who toiled manfully bowling 25 overs in the innings.
After tea Siddique and Hughes seemed to be steering Derby home but then Hughes ,who had scored 45 at a run a ball, impetuously slogged Ball to mid on for Andrew Carter to take a catch over his head running backwards.
The new ball had been taken two overs earlier and when Siddique (54) edged to Kelsall off Phillips Notts sniffed an opening .
Jake Ball then accounted for Needham and Poynton who had scored 30 mainly from streaky shots through backward point & third man.
332-8 but Sherriff hit his first ball for four & the winning run came off the first ball of the next over from Phillips to secure victory for Derbyshire
Jake Ball ended with 5-97 from 21 overs and Ben Phillips returned 2-72.
