Charlie Shreck took 2-61 as Notts began to make inroads into an assured Lancashire batting unit.
Having strode confidently to 109 without loss, Sutcliffe was run out before Shreck found his line to see off Soy and debutant Lou Vincent.
“Having seen the wicket, we’re reasonably pleased to have kept them to three runs per over and get five wickets,” said Shreck.
“The ball isn’t really swinging but I was lucky enough to find two edges.
“Lancashire have played well and they appear to understand the conditions but we’ll be hoping to keep the economy rate down and use the spinners more as the pitch deteriorates.”
Lancashire finished the first day 260-5.
