Mark Ramprakash remains in search of his elusive hundredth hundred as Surrey reached 356-7 at the end of day two at Trent Bridge.
Usman Afzaal reached 89 before missing a straight ball from Charlie Shreck which went on to hit off-stump as Surrey became the first team to reach 300 at Trent Bridge in the LV County Championship this season.
Matthew Spriegel hit 51 before he was caught by Patel at short-leg off the bowling of Graeme Swann but Chris Jordan maintained the momentum to reach 57 not out alongside Saqlain Mushtaq (27).
“Surrey have batted for a long time at a low scoring rate and with the rain delays it will be very difficult for us to win the game from this position,” said Notts Director of Cricket Mick Newell.
“It’s a good pitch for the batsmen but bonus points will be important if the game is heading for a draw so we’ll be looking to get a couple of wickets in the first four overs tomorrow to get maximum bowling points.”
Play resumes on Sunday at 11am.
