We'’ve added a new section to www.nottsccc.co.uk today and we hope it’s an area you’ll enjoy reading, as we celebrate 24 of Nottinghamshire’s greatest players.
Over the years Trent Bridge has been graced with some of the all-time greats playing in Notts colours, and club historian Peter Wynne-Thomas has selected 24 of the very best Notts cricketers to profile as Old Players in the Cricket section.
Said Peter: “While Nottinghamshire may not have won too many trophies since the war, we have been fortunate enough to see many great players walking down the pavilion steps over the years.
“I’ve been coming to Trent Bridge since 1946 and have seen all of the famous names in action. I based my selection on my thoughts and memories and also the statistical facts on who had performed best for the club.”
Among the players featured are cricketing knights Sir Richard Hadlee and Sir Garry Sobers, as well as fans’ favourites Paul Johnson and Derek Randall.
Peter added: “Some may be surprised at one or two omissions, but I decided the players in my list needed to fulfil two criteria.
“The selection is limited to those who appeared in at least 75 first-class games for Notts after 1945, and I have also excluded the current playing staff, as I think hindsight and future results will determine just how good any of them are.”
Peter has also selected a balanced All-Time XI from the list to be inaugurated into a Notts Hall of Fame at the end of this season.
He said: “While my XI is entirely subjective, I believe this team could take on and beat any side in the world.
“Lists of these nature are bound to generate debate and I would be interested to hear from fans who have picked their own XI from the list.”
And if you send in your own All-Time XI to us, you could win two hospitality tickets for the Sunday 29 July to watch England vs India in the Derek Randall Suite, which includes morning coffee and biscuits on arrival, four course lunch, traditional afternoon tea, match scorecard and souvenir programme and a special souvenir gift.
Email competitions@nottsccc.co.uk with your XI in batting order and whoever comes closest to Peter's selection will win the prize. The deadline for all entries is midnight 30 June 2007.
