Ryan Sidebottom was the sole Nottinghamshire player named today in England’s provisional 30-man squad for the Twenty20 World Cup.
There had been considerable speculation that in-form Samit Patel was in line for a call-up as a reward for his outstanding performances in the qualifying stages of the domestic competition.
But the former England Under-19 star has been overlooked and so too has Chris Read, who has missed out on the back-up wicketkeeper’s spot.
The selectors have stuck with Leicestershire veteran Paul Nixon, who will compete for that place with Matt Prior.
The Twenty20 World Cup takes place in South Africa in September and Sidebottom, a key man for Notts last season when they finished runners-up in the domestic cup competition, will be hoping he survives the cut in mid-August, when the squad is reduced to 15 players.
