Academy bowler Jake Ball will make his Notts debut in Monday’s NatWest Pro40 match against Sussex Sharks.

Ball, who has performed well for the Notts Academy and Second Eleven this season will be joined in the side by Akhil Patel after Mick Newell elected to rest several players ahead of Wednesday’s top of the table LV County Championship game against Durham.

Chris Read, Ali Brown, Mark Ealham and Darren Pattinson all miss out with Matt Wood set to captain the side.

Charlie Shreck will travel to the south coast to spear-head a young seam attack featuring Ball, Andy Carter and Kevin O’Brien. Mark Wagh, Jason Brown and Samit Patel give the side an experienced core with Alex Hales hoping to build on his unbeaten 150 against Worcestershire.

“Realistically, we can’t win NatWest Pro40 this season and we didn’t want to ask our strongest eleven to travel to Hove before such an important game in the north east,” said Newell.

“Jake and Akhil have done well in the second eleven and I want to see how they cope playing against better players in 40-over cricket.

“If the game was at Trent Bridge, we’d take a different approach but we feel that giving game time to younger players this season will stand them in good stead for next year’s campaign and help to protect the backbone of our four-day side.”
