Awaiting Nottinghamshire First-Class Debut
Young fast bowler James Hayes developed his craft in Somerset, under the tutelage of former Nottinghamshire seamer Ben Phillips, and caught the eye of the Green and Golds’ coaching staff when offered the chance to trial with the Trent Bridge club.
Blooded into the county first team for the Royal London Cup competition last summer, he played in the two matches at Grantham, taking 2-58 against Middlesex on debut, snaring the wickets of Max Holden and Luke Hollmann.
In his maiden appearance for the Second XI in 2021 Hayes took five for 20 against Warwickshire, a performance guaranteed to get tongues wagging.
After finishing college, Hayes spent time at the Darren Lehmann Academy in Adelaide while playing for club side Port Adelaide. He credits his time in Australia, matches for Bridgwater in the West of England Premier League and the hours spent with Phillips for the physical and technical improvements in his game that led him to West Bridgford and caught the eye of the Nottinghamshire coaching staff.
